Financial Benefits

The Honjo International Scholarship in Japan is a fully funded award that provides generous monthly stipends to cover living expenses throughout the study period:

  • ¥230,000 per month for programs of 1–2 years

  • ¥210,000 per month for programs of 3 years

  • ¥180,000 per month for programs of 4–5 years

This financial support is designed to cover all essential living costs, allowing scholars to focus entirely on their studies and research in Japan.

Required Documents

When applying, candidates must submit the following documents via the online application system:

  • Academic Transcripts

    • Transcripts from undergraduate studies and, if applicable, graduate programs.

    • Documents must be in Japanese or English; if issued in another language, attach a certified translation.

  • Research Proposal

    • Complete the official template in Japanese.

    • Describe your research objectives, contribution to your home country, and highlight past academic or professional achievements.

  • Recommendation Letter

    • Written by a current or former academic supervisor.

    • Should evaluate your academic performance, character, and future potential.

  • Proof of Admission

    • Submit an admission letter or certificate of enrollment.

    • If not available by April 30, 2026, state the expected availability date and provide it once received.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Honjo International Scholarship 2026/27, applicants must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Citizenship: Must not hold Japanese citizenship.

  • Enrollment: Be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, a graduate program in Japan beginning September or October 2026.

  • Age Limit: Under 35 years old for PhD applicants and under 30 years old for Master’s applicants.

  • Commitment: Demonstrate a clear intention to contribute to the development of their home country.

  • Language Requirement: Possess sufficient Japanese proficiency, as interviews will be conducted in Japanese.
